Newsletter: March 2007

We are currently seeing a few changes with regard to staff - some permanent and some temporary. Our previous head nurse Michelle is on maternity leave at the minute looking after baby Mia and Associate Vet Louise has just started her maternity leave with her baby due in late spring.

Sarah Metcalfe, who is very experienced and has been with the practice for a lot of years, has moved smoothly back into the head nurse position she previously held before having daughter Amy. We have an Australian locum Kaylene Jones deputising for Louise at present and Jaqueline Fergie who joined as an Associate Vet about a year ago is proving herself to be a very competent vet and valued member of the team. Two new nurses have also joined us Rachel Phoenix, a graduate, who will qualify as a Veterinary Nurse this summer and Kathryn Skidmore a qualified Veterinary Nurse who has joined us from a practice in Middlesbrough.

Spring is just around the corner after a long, wet, if mild winter; it is likely that a greater number of fleas will be active this spring because of our changing climate; with this in mind we are offering you a deal on Frontline - still one of the market leaders in flea control - if you buy from us for your pets before the end of April we will give you a 10% discount. As there may be a price rise later in the year and the product carries a long shelf life it may be worth your buying a supply for a whole year on this deal.

Thinking about preventative care always makes me think of the importance of neutering - it is not only more healthy for your pet but it also cuts down the risk of unwanted litters of puppies and kittens still such a problem for the animal charities to deal with despite their heroic efforts. We always try to help and encourage responsible pet ownership so, from March 2007 if you are bringing in a new puppy or kitten for vaccination and health checks in your puppy or kitten pack you will find a voucher for a 15% discount if you have your new pet neutered before he or she becomes a year old. This offer will run until the end of September 2007.

Sarah, like all our nurses thinks that preventative healthcare is very important and she has come up with a scheme that Micaela and I think could well benefit many pets that look outwardly fit and healthy. We all recognise the obviously poorly pet but what if there is something you cannot see causing internal problems? In such a situation an early indication of trouble can be flagged by routine blood testing. We currently offer routine blood tests for all our surgical patients and many of our poorly ones but, again with prevention of problems in mind, we are now offering a 15% discount on routine haematology and biochemistry blood profiling together with a free nurse health check. This offer will initially run until the end of June - to take advantage of it please contact reception or email the practice.

Hot news just in! We are delighted to announce that Sarah Metcalfe our Head Nurse is one of the three finalists for the prestigious Pet Plan Veterinary Nurse of the Year Award. Sarah is one of three selected from 1100 nominees and we all wish her well at the BSAVA congress in April where the winner will be announced at a special Pet Plan award ceremony. We’ll keep you posted and a big thank you to those clients who endorsed Sarah’s nomination.
