There are some diseases your pets can catch which may pass to yourselves or your children. These are called Zoonotic diseases and are thankfully very rare. The dog roundworm Toxacara is the most well known of these problems - to offset this risk we recommend regular worming. Some skin problems are also transmissible - if you are asked to shampoo your pet or apply a topical cream please always wear protective gloves.
Worming
We recommend worming puppies every 2 weeks up to 6 months of age. Thereafter, dogs should be wormed every 3 months and cats every 6 months. This helps protect not only your pet but also your family and the environment. This is in line with BSAVA policy. There are many drugs available for worming. It is important to use broad spectrum products, particularly in young animals, and we are more than happy to advise you on product selection. Worming adult cats with tablets can be a bit tricky; there is a very good spot-on product available instead - please ask reception for information or email us on info@stanhope-vet.co.uk.
